American Express Travel Insurance also has several optional add-ons such as:
- Rental Vehicle Excess
- Luggage Upgrade
- Winter Sports Cover
- Golf Cover
but these can only be selected by travellers who are 79 years or younger at the time of applying for any American Express travel insurance.

1 Optional Extra, must be requested and reflected on Certificate of Insurance.
2 Not included in any plan by default. You can purchase this cover as a standalone plan or an optional extra, and must be reflected on your Certificate of Insurance.
The benefit limits shown above will vary according to the geographical region or country, coverage type, and plan selected, as specified in your Certificate of Insurance. Subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions as covered in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
Optional Extras and Add-Ons
American Express Travel Insurance offer four optional extras and add-ons, these are:
- Rental Vehicle Excess – included on all plans by default, except Basic and Essentials. It can be requested for the Basic and Essentials Plan, but this must happen when applying for cover, and it must be stipulated on the Certificate of Insurance. The benefit limit for both Basic and Essential is the same as for all other plans when selected as an optional extra.
- Luggage Upgrade – all plans include cover for some Luggage, Personal Effects and Travel Documents benefits, but with varying limits. This can be upgraded to a maximum benefit limit, but again, this needs to be selected as an optional extra when taking out cover, and needs to be indicated on the Certificate of Insurance.
- Winter Sports and Golf Cover – these are not included by default on any plan, and can be purchased as an add-on, or as standalone cover. They offer cover for your own equipment, hired equipment, and for various fees you might have prepaid but are unable to benefit from due to certain circumstances.
Pre-Existing Medical Conditions
American Express travel insurance includes automatic cover for up to 52 pre-existing medical conditions, but only if certain conditions are met. General conditions that apply to all automatically covered pre-existing medical conditions include:
- That you have not been hospitalised for any reason related to your pre-existing medical condition in the 24 months preceding your purchase of a travel insurance policy, including day surgery or visits to the emergency department.
- That you are not over the age of 75 years when taking out the policy. This applies to most pre-existing medical conditions that are automatically covered, though some have lower age limits as indicated in the PDS.
- That you are not taking any blood-thinning prescription medication.
Other pre-existing medical conditions have additional terms and conditions attached to them, but these are all specified in the PDS.
American Express Travel Insurance Claims and Excess
While it is always best to notify American Express Travel Insurance of any event that might necessitate a claim, you have up to 30 days of the event taking place to lodge a claim.
Claims can be submitted online via aceclaim.com/amex/au-en/welcome.aspx, but you should ensure you have all the details of the event, along with supporting documentation when preparing to submit a claim. You can also initiate a claim telephonically by calling 1800 139 149 from within Australia (Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm AEST). For overseas emergency assistance you can contact +61 2 8907 5666 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
All claims are subject to an excess, and the value of this excess is specified by you when taking out the policy. A lower excess will result in a higher premium, while a higher excess for each claim will lead to a lower premium. The excess amount will be deducted from any claim amount payable to you.
