World Nomads Travel Insurance Plans
Unlike other travel insurance plans, the World Nomads Travel Insurance products are designed for Australians who will travel, work, volunteer or study overseas for an extended period of time. There are only two plans available, but the benefits and benefit limits differ considerably from other travel insurance products:
- Standard Plan – the Standard Plan is the more affordable of the two plans, but as a result the limits for some benefits are lower, while other benefits such as alternative medical therapies and car rental excess are not included at all. The plan can be purchased for single travellers, as well as by couples/duo’s and families.
- Explorer Plan – this is a more comprehensive plan, with higher benefit limits, and more benefits overall. As with the Standard Plan, it can be bought by single travellers, couples/duo’s and families.

1 An excess and/or waiting period applies per event, depending on the situation and benefit claimed from participating in these adventure sports, work, study or volunteer activities.
This summary is intended only as a guideline and you should read the relevant PDS for full details of each benefit, sub-limits, and conditions, exclusions, and restrictions that may apply. Benefit limits show are for Couple/Duo or Family policies and show the maximum amount payable per policy for the duration of the trip.
General Conditions or Exclusions for World Nomads Travel Insurance Plans
It is important to note that specific conditions and exclusions apply to all World Nomads Travel Plans. More detail of these can be found in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), but include the following:
- Travellers must be 69 years old or younger at the time they buy or extend their policy.
- Single traveller is defined as one person travelling alone or accompanied by up to eight dependants.
- Couples/Duo’s are two people travelling together for the majority of the trip and with no accompanying dependents.
- Families are two adults who are travelling together for the majority of the trip with up to eight dependents.
- Dependents are children, grandchildren, or others for whom you are the legal guardian, who are not in full time employment, are 20 years old or younger at the time you buy or extend your policy, are travelling with you for the majority of the trip, and are listed as covered on your Certificate of Insurance.
- All plans are only available to Australian residents or citizens who are - or will be - temporarily travelling, studying, working or living overseas, or are on a one-way ticket and have no idea where their travels will take them.
- They are also available to Australian residents or citizens who are planning to participate in a range of adventure sports and activities, going on a working holiday, or planning to study or volunteer overseas.
Pre-Existing Medical Conditions
World Nomads Travel Insurance includes automatic cover for 23 pre-existing medical conditions (including pregnancy), but with certain conditions attached. These are outlined in more detail in the PDS but include not having been hospitalised (including day surgery) or attended an emergency department in the past 24 months for that condition. There is no optional cover for pre-existing medical conditions not automatically covered, but this does not prevent you from being able to purchase World Nomads travel insurance; it simply means you will not be able to claim for any events directly or indirectly related to these pre-existing medical conditions.
